I have started the "Weight Watchers" program but with any weight loss regimen, it can be hard to follow it all the time. The other day, for example, the hubby made the quick, simple meal of kielbasa with some fried up onions and peppers and potatoes. Well, they say in WW that you can eat all the vegetables and fruit you want. But not exactly.
Potatoes, corn, and peas are not free. They have points. Yes, it has a point system and it emphasizes eating protein but you have to watch your meat. Lean chicken (no bone or skin) attached is only 2 points for three ounces. But kielbasa, three ounces of that is, over 10! If it's fat and greasy, you need to avoid it.
So I am learning the points system. And they encourage you exercising. I think eventually, if you lose your intended weight then you can eventually swap out the exercise points for food points, or something on that order.

Winter Cold, New Year's exercise resolution, got Lisa Whelchel exercise tape
It appears that we are again going to miss having any real snowfall. I have to admit that that is a disadvantage to living in a valley, but you also avoid driving in precarious weather conditions.
This time of year I have to admit I don't like the severe cold and winter whipping winds. The other day was a bit windy but we were somewhat shielded as we took a short trek over a tiny part of the frisbee golf course in the woods, behind the "mid county park" in Christiansburg. It'd rained and gee, it was a bit slippery and there seemed to be dried out old grape vines everywhere, along with some downed trees. But we got a little exercise going up and down then up a different part of the frisbee course behind the picnic shelter and pool area for this park. (And they call the pool area the 'frog pond'. Well, they have a big plastic frog slide for little kids, and the pond is actually the pool itself.)
Speaking of exercising-- I hope to lose some weight this spring. To help me, I have purchased online the "Lisa Whelchel" exercise DVD. She was on TV's "Facts of Life" and "Survivor". She lost a lot of weight on Survivor and I think maybe she came up with this tape/dvd to help keep her weight off. The exercises she showed on "The Talk" didn't look hard so I hope I can do these regularly. I know that there are other exercise DVDs, but I haven't used one on a regular basis since Richard Simmon's "Sweating to the Oldies" on VHS cassette. I need to exercise at home as well as go to Curves and I hope this will do the trick. So many of these dvds require super stomach strength (having kids shot my stomach muscles to hell) so I bet this will be a helpful tape. Are there any other tapes for those who aren't that strong in the middle?

Losing Weight is harder as you age, school and writing and Nanowrimo month!
While my talkative class has settled down, I still find that teaching can be both tiring and stressful. Am I in the wrong business?
It would be fun to do something like the "Crocodile hunter -- Steve Irwin" did-- go out and talk about nature. Talking to a camera has to be easier than talking to 18-20 year old students! But my quiet class does listen, so that's a good thing. Students don't realize that listening can be a good thing!
I am jealous of a neighbor. She has lost 70 pounds. I lose a few pounds, gain a few pounds, back and forth. It is difficult to lose weight after menopause, and after being put on an anti-hormone pill that I think compromised my hormones and metabolism even more! What do you do with a low metabolism? And don't tell me to eat hot peppers -- it hurts my throat! I have acid reflux and a hiatal hernia to boot!
Losing weight is more of a struggle than reaching students, perhaps.
But it is Nanowrimo (sp?) -- national novel writing month! And I am working on something I call "A Moroccan adventure". A member of my church mentioned some things about their culture and it sounds somewhat exotic and could be an interesting locale for a story. They have cities somewhat like ours, and so the traditional sheep herding tribal clans and maybe I could tap into that -- and in the mountains hashish is grown, illegally but still used by many, and they will throw foreigners in the clink if they think they are using/trafficking in it, so that gave me a few ideas. And the idea of mistaken identity, which could get you into a lot of trouble in a foreign country. So I am writing about that and how a young couple gets separated because of this mistaken identity. Maybe it could be a good short story or novella. I am trying to write that AND my novel on education, "Lessons".
